A Cooperative Preschool

Family engagement is crucial for a great learning place where kids can thrive.

Parent Involvement in a Co-Op

Parent of the Day: The Parent of the Day (POD) is an adult representative from a family who functions in the classroom as the helping adult for that particular class session. A family can choose to send a mother, father, stepparent, grandparent, or another appropriate adult who has an ongoing, close relationship with the student. This person must be able to perform the POD duties as outlined in the Parent Handbook, and must complete all of the paperwork required by the Maryland Department of Education including a background check. The POD responsibility rotates on a regular basis.

School Administration: Families are vital to the administration and operation of the school. Parents/guardians participate by being on the Executive Board or the school committees. Adults are encouraged to volunteer to fill the Execute Board positions, with a maximum of two year commitment. A sign-up sheet for committees will be available at Parent Orientation prior to the start of the school year. Spouses can serve on separate committees as well. The wide variety of committee choices is sure to include something of interest for every family and to continue to build the community within the school. Click on the button below to see a list of Board positions and committees.

Meetings: A general meeting, Parent Orientation, is held in late August/early September. At least one parent is required to attend the meeting. The August/September meeting is the orientation for all members participating in the upcoming school year. It is best for families to make other arrangements for their children on that evening.

Support of Teachers and Classroom Lessons: Parents at Calvert Nursery School help make fun and exciting things happen for their children. Classroom lessons often require a variety of components to come together in order to achieve maximum benefit for the students. From time to time, teachers may ask parent volunteers to cut construction paper or bring in special items. Please support the teachers in this area as often as possible. Also, a family member may possess a special interest or skill that he or she is willing to share with the students. Others may have community contacts or field trip ideas that could enhance a particular lesson. Please let the teacher know about these special circumstances.
