The 3’s have a choice of the AM/morning class or the PM/afternoon class. These classes meet on Thursday and Friday. The classes for the 3’s emphasize age appropriate readiness skills such as recognizing and writing their name, colors, patterns, counting and many other skills. Various topics are introduced throughout the year and the activities are designed to develop their readiness skills. They practice socialization through play with friends during free time and the centers (painting, independent play, sand table, an activity with the teacher and the Parent of the day). The children learn about school habits such as transitioning to the centers, circle time, clean up time and taking care of their own papers.
The 4’s have a choice of the AM/morning class or the PM/afternoon class. These classes meet on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Curriculum for the 4’s includes readiness skills combined with seasonal topics and fun projects. The classes for the 4’s emphasize age appropriate readiness skills such as recognition of letters, phonetic sounds, hearing the sounds in words, and writing letters. They practice number recognition, verbal counting, and combining sets. They practice social skills during stations and free play.
The 3’s and 4’s vary how they learn particular readiness skills. For example, the 3’s practice letters as they see everyone’s name. The 4’s practice letters as they go through the alphabet with one letter each week. Another difference between the age groups is that the 3’s go through their stations at the pace set by the teacher and there is a specific free play station during that time. The 4’s develop their readiness for kindergarten through craft and art stations, with the free play set as last to encourage the students to manage their time.
Some elements of the preschool class time are similar for the 3’s and 4’s such as helper jobs, calendar, circle time, music, art, playground, show and tell, free play, and snack. The teachers have individualized these learning experiences to the particular age group and the children.
